Staying there
Poor, happily stuck in the past, Gimmelwald has a happy youth hostel, some bed and breakfast accommodation and small hotels.

The Mountain Hostel
The mountain hostel, where I often stay, is well known by the backpacking crowd and mentioned in most of the back packing guide books. In a creaky old farm house, it provides dormitory beds at 20 Swiss Franks per night (about $15) and a guest kitchen and a pool table.
It is one of the best hostels I know. A family atmosphere spontaneously comes into being around the pasta on the kitchen stove and spreads into the common room.
Call a day in advance to reserve a bed and bring food if you want to do your own cooking, as there are no stores in Gimmelwald.
There is a store up in Mürren, 5 minutes on the cable car or 30 minutes on foot.

Hotel Mittaghorn
The Hotel Mittaghorn is a small hotel in a classic Alpine-style chalet, run by an elderly gentleman. Quiet, clean and comfortable and a million dollar view of the Jungfrau Alps. On the beds are ancient down comforters (duvet) (short and fat, wear socks and drape the blanket over your feet).

A few hundred feet above Gimmelwald is the village of Mürren. It is more touristy but also has more and more modern hotels.
There is also new hostel in Lauterbrunnen:

Meals are served at the Pension and the Hotel Mittaghorn, though it is a bit uncertain whether
the kitchen is open. For tips on food and drink in the area, nobody says it better than
